THE CAKE LAB BAKERY - IRISH WEDDING VENDOR SERIES

Welcome to the 6th week of Irish Wedding Vendor Series. For the month of April and May I am going to interview one vendor once a week from the wedding industry that I am really fond of.  I am going to ask them questions that will give insight into their professional work.

Today the interview is about a two girl team. It's not just The Cake Lab Bakery it's a company filled with just the right kinds of backgrounds of two beautiful, dedicated and creative women. Yasemin, the Chief Baker at The Cake Lab Bakery and her mum Susan, the brains of organising and making sure all the right questions have been asked and answered! Their work is always beautiful, delicate and personable. Here's the insides scoop:

Why did you decide to become a Wedding Cake Supplier?

We both come from different backgrounds, I studied Baking and Pastry Arts Management in College and my mum studied Interior Architecture at College. I had been supplying bakes to pubs and making novelty celebration cakes for a few years.  One day we decided to go into business together and while researching cakes we kept coming across beautiful wedding cakes.  It just seemed like the next step. Our brains went wedding cake crazy and we have not stopped since.  We love being part of the planning for the big days, hearing the couple’s concept ideas, being involved in the design evolution process and producing a work of art that represents the couple’s aspirations for their special day.  We love hearing about how the day went and how their guests loved the flavours of our cakes - it gives us a high that lasts for days.

What inspires you the most about your work?

Our job is a hard one. It’s not all about cake tastings and eating cake. There is a lot of work involved in each cake. Sometimes cakes are started months in advance to make sure we have the correct cake stands, toppers, tools, ribbons, etc. However, it can be deeply rewarding too.  Probably the most inspiring thing about our work is getting to see our customer’s reactions. It fills us with such a sense of joy to know we have made them happy and provided them with a service above and beyond than what they had initially asked for. We love to be creative and make people happy and being a cake decorator lets you be creative and provide people with a WOW factor. Knowing that we have added something beautiful to someone’s day inspires us to keep learning, experimenting, and giving our clients the best we can.

Where do you see yourself in 5 years time?

We hope to become more established and recognised in our trade. We would love to have our own retail outlet/café. It is where we could also hold cake tastings and cake consultations. We are natural event organisers and hosts and we want to provide not just a slice of cake but an overall experience. In this busy, hectic, time poor world, if we can give respite for even half an hour in a relaxing environment with welcoming customer service, handmade cakes and excellent coffee, we would be very content.

It's impressive how big your goals are when you work in a team. When the girls told me they wanted to open up a retail outlet/café I was amazed at their confidence and inspired by it! Again, you don't know what people are up to until you ask and I'm so glad I did.
